Unaccompanied Immigrant Children Crisis News

As of the last report, unaccompanied immigrant children will not be coming to Greater Dallas for temporary shelter. Responses to this crisis now focus on the detention centers in South Texas, and on children and families who are being released to the care of relatives here in Dallas and nearby communities. It may be that this winter's Mike's Kids ministry will help Good Samaritan Ministry in the Rio Grande Valley reach out to some of these, so we would like to emphasize this ministry. Mike's Kids will launch at the Nov.1 NTA Mens' Breakfast at United Disciples Christian Church in Richardson.

The Situation

  • Tens of thousands of  unaccompanied children are expected to enter Texas by the end of the year, most coming from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador to escape extreme violence, trafficking, and exploitation. Many people of faith are portesting their speedy deportation, fearing they willbe returning to violence.
  • How You Can Help Now in South Texas:
  • Family and Immigration: Attorneys and Interpreters. All of these children's cases need to be reviewed to determine the best course of action creating huge demand for family and immigration attorneys and interpreters.
  • Foster Families. Roughly 15,000 children are still expected to be placed with American foster families through the existing 'Unaccompanied Refugee Minor Program' which includes an expedited screening process. For more information or to apply, visit the Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Services or the US Conference of Catholic Biships pages..
  • Support Week of Compassion with monetary donations. You can specify that they be used for this crisis.

Two Southwest Region preachers will keynote the Regional Mens' Retreat this September 19-21 at Lake Brownwood: Raumone Burton from Houston and Mark Denton from Albuquerque. They will speak on the theme of "In, NOT of This World." Song leader Rick Linn is coming all the way from his retirement home in Georgia. Rick was our song leader for many years before John Malget took over, Workshops include two by the keynote speakers, one by Jimmie Muckleroy and Les Hodson on "How to Coordinate and Fulfill a Mission Work Project", one by Larry Seery on "Spirituality", and one by David Theel on "The Status of CCSW Regional Structure Changes and Future Options." There may also be a follow-on workshop about using social media in church activities. ANY request for a scholarship toward registration fees can cover up to 50% of the fee. First time attendees will still only pay $50. Late fees are charged after August 31st. Please request a registration form from the NTA Area Office () or go to the CCSW.ORG website and find it there.

The Engaging Church Seminar
Is On-Line at the NTA Website!

engaging_church_250w.jpgThe North Texas Area of the Christian Church in the Southwest has launched an on-line video seminar for churches in the NTA. The NTA has licensed the "Engaging Church" seminar produced by Church Growth, Inc. The arrangement allows the NTA to present the complete video seminar in its secure Member Portal for the clergy and laity of the North Texas Area.

The seminar discusses how to attract outsiders, connect visitors and integrate new members. The seminar is presented in high-quality Flash video in six sessions. In addition to all six full-length videos, the seminar workbook is provided, session summaries and an area-wide on-line discussion forum for talking about each session of the seminar.
